SURFERS Against Nuclear Destruction has benefited greatly from Trevor "Big Trev" Arbon over three decades.
Now, since most of his water sports business was destroyed by a suspicious blaze on February 9 this year, it is time to give back.
Long-time friend Terry "Tappa" Teece said he, Byron Hoskins and a raft of mates would come together at the Dolphins Hotel for the Big Trev's Day Out fundraiser.
"He's one of the kindest-hearted men you could know," Tappa said.
"As soon as I learned what happened I wanted to do something about it.
"My reaction? Anger and disgust that anyone could do this to just such a great bloke."
Tappa is the right man to emcee the event, as he does so for various functions twice a week.
He and Big Trev met as members of SAND, which raised more than $1 million during its fight against nuclear testing and has since become Surfers Against Nature's Destruction.
"That's why when I heard about Trev I was keen to jump up and lend a hand," he said.
"Trev has always helped out so many people people - it's great to be able to give back."
Big Trev said since the incident he had become well-aware of how "beautiful the community is".
"I'm proud of the community spirit, proud of my friends, though I was a bit shy about it at first.
" 'Apprehensive' was probably the word - I haven't been sleeping well since it happened but the fundraiser has definitely lightened me up a little bit."
He said he mainly needed a new van, an outboard motor and sails for his 14ft catamarans.
The "humble, almost a little embarrassed" business man is unfortunately as reluctant to seek help as he is motivated to give it, Tappa said.
"He needs an outboard motor, he needs a truck, and people are trying to source things on the cheap so he can get his business going.
"I'd say we'll have quite a few people to raise some money for Trev.
"He lost about $30,000 in equipment, including his van.
"We've gotta get Trev back on his feet again."
The March 3 event will feature special guests The Trevettes, a surf film by Shagga, seven bands, raffles, auctions, giveaways and a door prize.
