A CAR fire early this morning has destroyed a Tweed business.

Trevor Arbon, proprietor of Big Trev's Watersports on Jack Evans Boat Harbour, woke to the sound of his neighbours yelling out that his Hiace van was on fire.

The van was on the property at the time.

"I ran out and it was panic stations but it (the van) was too far gone," Mr Arbon said.

"I have lost everything - the business is ruined.

"It was my only vehicle and it was loaded with lifejackets, paddles and new stand-up paddle boards. My entire business is gone."

Mr Arbon said the equipment was not insured.

Firefighters were called to the car fire at 5.23am and Bilinga and Tweed Heads crews attended but the van was "engulfed" when the crews arrived.

It took the crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire.

Coolangatta Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

Police want to talk to anyone who saw suspicious activity in Dixon Street Coolanagatta between 2.30am and 3.30am this morning.
