SINCE its January 26 postponement due to heavy rain and flooding, our 2011 Australia Day Awards and Citizenship Ceremony will go ahead today.

The Tweed Shire Awards will be presented by Mayor Barry Longland and Australia Day Committee chairman Don Beck.

Cr Longland said finally having the opportunity to present certificates to individuals, teams and organisations so thoroughly deserving of them was "wonderful".

"It's great that everyone has been so understanding and flexible about the event being washed out last week and re-scheduled.

"I look forward to getting together with the awardees and their family and friends to acknowledge their contribution to our community," he said.

As most other shire events were also cancelled on Australia Day, local towns and villages will also present their local awards following official presentations.

Community awards for Tyalgum, Tumbulgum, Bogangar, Uki, Murwillumbah and Burringbar will be presented by community members from the Australia Day Committee.

Mr Beck said he was glad today's re-scheduled ceremony would bring together representatives from the community.

"I'm pleased we were able to find a day which suited most people and not only present the shire awards but also provide a venue for the local awards."

Events will run 2pm (NSW) to 3.30pm at the Murwillumbah Civic and Cultural Centre's auditorium. Forty Tweed residents from 16 nations across the globe will become Australian citizens.
