Rain persists but flood fears lessen

RAIN clouds still hang over the Tweed but any immediate threat of flooding has passed.

Emergency workers are remaining vigilant but the threat is over with river levels remaining steady or falling in the region.

A NSW police coordination centre set up for to manage emergency personnel and update residents during the flooding of the Tweed River closed at midday on Sunday.

The Public information and Inquiry Centre took more than 1850 calls from the public who were seeking flood information.

Police said people in flood affected areas should continue to listen to the radio and visit internet sites to get the most up-to-date information with rain persisting in the region.

The weather system that moved over the Tweed on Wednesday produced the heaviest falls which caused widespread flooding in communities along the Tweed River.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the highest rainfall for a 24-hour period on Wednesday was a Bald Mountain with 285mm and the highest rainfall for the week to Sunday was close to the border at Numinbah with 746mm of rain.

Most of the rain for January came last week with the bureau recording in the seven days to Sunday;

  • 470mm at Murwillumbah
  • 720mm at Bald Mountain (near Limpinwood)
  • 500mm at Uki
  • 716mm at Hopkins Creek
  • 556mm at Chillingham
  • 485mm at Tumbulgum
  • 487mm at Bilambil Heights
  • 440mm at Banora.
