Talk on sustainable housing

An example of an "earthship" which is a self-sustainable house.

AN American environmentalist and architect will come to Bangalow and the Gold Coast next month to show off his range of sustainable homes.

He's called them Earthships.

They're living, eating machines with thermal mass for cooling and heating, and self sufficient for power and water, made from the earth, to protect the earth.

Like something out of Dr Seuss.

Michael Reynolds has used over 40 years of research to develop the futuristic houses, built in over 17 countries including the United States, Mexico, Europe and Canada.

"I see people as stressed and starved right now all over the planet," Mr Reynolds said.

"If you could take the people of this planet and make them relax and totally comfortable with knowing they had sustenance for them and their families and for the future... people are not trusting with anyone these days expect maybe the sun."

The Earthships allow people to live entirely off the grid, obtaining electricity from the sun and wind, water from rain and snow, containing a sewerage sanitary treatment, heating and cooling from the earth, food that you grow inside and outside and they're made from natural and recycled materials.

Earthship seminars will be held at Bangalow A&I Hall on February 23 and Bond University on February 24.
