THE threat of a $654 fine doesn't appear to be enough to deter jumpers from launching off Cudgen Creek bridge at Kingscliff.

The summer weather has brought the daredevils out of hiding again this year and although it's a council ordinate that prohibits the activity, police are also at liberty to dish out the fines.

Tweed police Inspector Brad Stewart said while it was usually council rangers that issued the infringements for climbing onto or jumping off a bridge, police would also hand out infringements if they caught people in the act.

"We definitely discourage that kind of risky behaviour," Insp Stewart said.

"If we drive past and see people jumping we'll hand out an infringement notice.

"And if they're under 18 they'll be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act."

Signs clearly outlining the dangers of bridge jumping are located at most Tweed shire bridges, including Cudgen Creek.
