Come on ... it's show time

MURWILLUMBAH show pavilion steward Judy Monement says several new sections have been added to this year's line up.

They include a competition for best decorated pair of boots; recycled furniture; best decorated cup cake, and display of photos called Step Back in Time.

Upstairs there will be the display of bananas and local fruit, wool, woodwork, quilting, spinning and weaving and cake decorating display.

Downstairs will include a new cheese making competition, cooking, jams and preserves, vegetables, beer brewing, and craft along with school work, garden club entries and photography competition.

Judy reminds people entering the cooking sections that entries need to be at the showground before noon on Thursday, November 4 when judging commences.

The annual Murwillumbah Show is fast approaching and how times have changed in some respects.

Many years ago the show was the major entertainment event on the local calendar.

Children looked forward to getting a new outfit for the show and if parents were lucky they might score one as well.

The family looked forward to the fun of the fair with sideshows and watching the ring events.

The farming community readied for months preparing livestock as well as cooking, sewing etc for the pavilion.

Kids collected bottles and sold spare produce to gather some money to spend on a hot dog and entry to a sideshow or ride.

Many country families brought their lunch and sat on the hillside overlooking the arena.

Times have changed but the tradition continues.

Now the committee has to think of new ways to attract patrons who have so many events happening in the community every weekend.

Sponsors are necessary to fund gate entry because of the cost of staging the event and insurance costs have soared.

However, the local showground is one of the very best in regional Australia and on November 5 and 6 will offer something for everyone with some new attractions.

So whether you are interested in horse sections, cattle sections, woodchops, sugar cane, poultry, trade exhibits, heritage sections, old machinery, sheep, the animal nursery, school relays, rodeo, monster trucks, minibike stunt team, All Star Circus, local bands or reptile show, Life Education van, Tweed Shire environmental trailer, alpaca display, utes and bikes, sideshows or fireworks there is something there for you.

Please make a gold coin donation so we can keep the entertainment coming.

Keep a watch out for more details or if you are into the internet look at www.murwillumbahshowground.com.
