A GRAND itinerary has been created to attract President Barack Obama to the Tweed when he visits Australia next month.

While Mayor Warren Polglase yesterday said attracting the Obama family to the shire was not on his agenda, Tweed Tourism general manager Phil Villiers put together a travel plan for the President should he stop over.

Far North Queensland’s Port Douglas is reportedly confident of attracting Mr Obama and his family after successfully hosting former president Bill Clinton, but Mr Villiers said Tweed could also offer secluded beaches and rainforest privacy.

“The first thing I would suggest would be that we took him to the top of Mt Warning,” Mr Villiers said.

“Noting his lack of time, perhaps we will helicopter him straight up to the top; it would give him a very good overview of the area.”

Second on the itinerary would be a trip to Tropical Fruit World where Mr Obama could compare fruits from when he was raised in Hawaii, and Mr Villiers said he might like to compete in the Malfunction Surf Festival or Kingscliff Triathlon.

Mr Villiers said he would take Mr Obama over the Tweed Valley via helicopter and have lunch at Mavis’ Kitchen – though he didn’t want to take him too far into the forest.

“If he would like to stay here, there are some fantastic chattels and lodges out the back of Murwillumbah in the rainforest,” he said.

“I wouldn’t send him to Nimbin, that would be a bad idea.”

A tour of the Tweed Shire in a rally car could round out the visit, Mr Villiers said.

Cr Polglase did not expect Mr Obama to grace the Tweed with his presence.

“Well, if he flies over and looks down upon us ... it probably would be the only time he will see us. I don’t think he will be taking any drives up the Pacific Highway.”

Cr Polglase said it was unrealistic to expect Mr Obama to visit the shire, so council would be dedicating its time to projects that were achievable.
