A DOLPHIN has been successfully moved back to open seas after a dramatic rescue attempt in Cudgen Creek this morning.

The male adult bottlenose dolphin became entangled in nets about 11.30am DST today during an operation led by New South Wales Parks and Wildlife Service to move the animal out of the creek in Kingscliff.

Marine authorities had been concerned over the welfare of a pod of dolphins which have been unwilling to leave the creek since Saturday January 16.

Confirmed sightings have previously included a mother and a nine-month-old calf.
