"I THINK I've got the best dad in the world."

Although these are the words of 11-year-old Thomas Bujayer, it could be said that this sentiment is shared between boys and girls, women and men alike, especially on the first Sunday of September each year - Father's Day.

This special day, set aside to honour fathers and their paternal bond with their children, has been celebrated across the world since originating in the US in 1910.

According to young Thomas, he is happiest when he spends time with his dad.

"My dad takes me to the park and lets us drive our remote-control cars around," Thomas said.

"He plays X-Box with me."

Proud son Lachie Arnicar, 11, has been preparing the world's biggest hug to give to his dad this weekend.

"I love my dad because he's very nice to me and he loves me," he said.

"I like how he accepts my decisions - he doesn't say, 'That's a stupid idea'."

Although Thomas and Lachie have their Father's Day gifts wrapped and at the ready, it can be tricky business to buy that special gift for dad.

But luckily, local businesses have it covered.

Tackle World Bundaberg manager Ben Shorten said Father's Day brought many women and children into what was usually a male-dominated domain.

"We've had a lot of mothers and kids come in," he said.

"It's just a constant flow."

Mr Shorten said kayaks had been popular Father's Day gifts this year.

"We've sold about five in the past week," he said.

"There's been some lucky fathers this year."

If your dad is a likely master chef in your household, look no further than Avenell Brothers.

Owner John Greenhalgh said the store was a cook's dream, with pots and pans and other kitchen appliances fully stocked on the shelves.

"A lot of men are interested in cooking these days," he said.

Mr Greenhalgh said Moroccan tagines were also great gift ideas.

"That's something that appeals to blokes," he said.
