BANGALOW Rd claimed another life yesterday morning when two cars collided near Stewarts Rd east of Clunes.

Emergency services staff rushed to the scene just after 11.30am and found a brown Hyundai sedan and a white Nissan X-Trail had slid down an embankment after colliding. Their occupants were trapped.

Tweed Byron Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Brad Stewart said the crash claimed the life of a 30-year-old local woman who was driving the Hyundai toward Clunes.

"That vehicle has driven onto the shoulder of the road which resulted in the vehicle sliding sideways with the passenger side leading," he said.

Insp Stewart said the vehicle slid for some distance before crossing to the wrong side of the road and colliding with the X-Trail containing two men aged 33 and 37.

"After they collided they ran off the western side of the road and down an embankment," he said.

Bangalow Rd was closed for more than three hours while the vehicles were salvaged and crash investigation officers examined the scene.

Paramedics transported the two men who were in the X-Trail to Lismore Base hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

Bangalow Rd was reopened at 2.35pm after officers from the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit finished their investigations.

A Northern NSW Local Health District representative said one man was in a stable condition and the extent of the other man's injuries was still being assessed.

A report on the woman's death will be prepared for the coroner. Insp Stewart urged anyone with any information on the crash to call Tweed Heads police on (07) 5536 0999 or Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

IN BRIEF

IN a separate accident, emergency services workers rushed to the scene of a single vehicle rollover on Rifle Range Rd at Wollongbar yesterday morning.

A NSW ambulance spokeswoman said when paramedics arrived on the scene about 8.30pm they found the car on its roof and its only occupant, a woman in her 20s, had got out of the car.

She did not sustain any serious injuries.
