Will Ferrell interviews Julia Gillard

IN A week strong on power plays, which include being likened to a cane toad and labelled persona non grata in the Northern Territory by her own party, perhaps no one would blame the Prime Minister for needing some light relief.

This might go some way to explain why Julia Gillard eschewed an appearance on ABC's 7.30 on Tuesday night to appear instead on Ten's infotainment news program The Project on which she was interviewed by none other than US comedian Will Ferrell.

Ferrell obviously brings a wealth of experience to political debate as he is, after all, the star of a Hollywood comedy in which he plays a politician seeking re-election.

As expected, the debate stayed strictly in the shallow end but it did give The Campaign star the chance to show off his research of our local political scene, including a deliberate stumble on Ms Gillard's marital status and a joke about her partner Tim Mathieson.

The hardest question Ms Gillard had to face was about Ferrell's split ends.
