TWO women were rushed to Lismore Base Hospital on Saturday after they were run over by a third woman in a motorised wheelchair at Ballina.

Police were called to Cherry St near the corner of Swift St outside the Uniting Church about 7.15am following reports that two women were injured.

Police said the two women were walking along the footpath when they were struck from behind by a woman driving the motorised wheel chair.

A 66-year-old Ballina woman received multiple fractures to both of her legs and underwent emergency surgery in Lismore Base Hospital.

An 80-year-old Ballina woman received a head laceration and a fractured arm.

Police are obtaining statements from witnesses and the investigation is continuing.

Police said there didn't appear to be any dispute over what happened.
