Warning as tides 2m higher than normal this week
BEACHES have disappeared across the Tweed this morning after an unusual high tide.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning on the unusual high tides expected due to dense pressure systems off the coast and the current wind directions.
"It may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas and are forecast for the Northern Rivers forecast district and parts of the Mid North Coast forecast district (Point Danger to Crowdy Head)," the bureau stated in the warning.
According to data from Manly Hydraulics Laboratory, who record tide levels across NSW, the high tides at the mouth of the Tweed River had raised from about 1.5m to almost 2m since the start of the week.
Marine Rescue Point Danger volunteer Steve Walters was at the command centre this morning checking out conditions.
He said the high tide was expected to reach 2m today.
"It will get rough on the bar when the tide starts going out considering the swell we have at the moment," he said.
An update on the conditions from the bureau was expected at 5pm.
