AS the temperature rises vandals with nothing better to do decided to light fires and smash shopfronts overnight at Murwillumbah.

At least two purposely lit fires were extinguished by firefighters and four buildings had their windows smashed.

NSW Fire and Rescue Murwillumbah captain Greg Hayes said the whole situation was ridiculous.

"Especially when it's a total fire ban," he said.

"It's reckless behaviour and it could have burnt a whole building down."

About 11pm the fire brigade got a call to a grassfire at Commercial Rd on the river bank.

"We put it out and about 30 minutes later we were called to a bin alight at Knox Park," Capt Hayes said.

"We put that out and about 20 minutes later we were called to Sunnyside Mall."

The fire alarm had been activated.

Repco was one of at least four retailers that had their windows smashed in.

A spokesman from the retail outlet said three windows has been smashed and it was the 8th time in six months.

"I think it's local youths," the spokesman said.

"It's a mix of all under 18-year-olds."

The spokesman said the store would now be upping security but still wanted CCTV cameras to be erected in the area.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Inspector Jim Kane said police would investigating, but could not provide any further details.
