Unwelcome guest

STAFF at Lincraft in Grafton are still treading carefully after the store, in the Shoppingworld complex, saw off an unwelcome guest on Thursday.

Store manager Melissa Baker said a one-metre black snake announced itself to staff and customers about 2.30pm when the visiting area manager, Amanda Mevisson, noticed it near her feet as she served a customer.

"She screamed and ran," Ms Baker said.

The fun started from there as staff tried to keep curious customers away from the reptile, while allowing it a clear path to the door and outside.

As hard as staff tried, the snake headed indoors instead of outside and customers crowded around trying to get a glimpse.

The store called animal rescue group WIRES, but in the meantime the snake was lost to view as it headed away from the commotion.

It was a busy day for WIRES on Thursday with six call-outs to deal with snakes in Grafton.
