TWEED Shire Council is considering a 23-unit development in Murwillumbah.

LFT Pty Ltd lodged the application for the $3.65 million development in 13-19 Church Lane last week.

The application includes the demolition of a building on the site.

Tweed mayor Barry Longland said he couldn't comment on the application before the council but did say that medium density development in Murwillumbah's CBD was welcome.

"The application before council will be assessed on its merits," Cr Longland said.

"Having medium density housing in certain parts of Murwillumbah's CBD is a good thing where more people are using the services already available.

"There's not a heap around if you don't include aged care facilities."

The developer was not available today for comment on the application.
