Uki locals to 're-tree' town
PLANET Ark's National Tree Day is fast approaching with everyone getting a chance to plant a tree.
Uki is no exception, with Sunday July 29 planned as the fourth time the town will gather to "re-tree" their village and its surrounds.
Last year 60 locals planted more than 1000 trees.
Spokeswoman Carolyn Rifello said National Tree Day creates a "great deal of excellent rehabilitation work along the Tweed River at Uki."
"This has been done by local people including teachers, children, volunteers and green Corps," she said.
"With the help of professional bush regenerators, we have achieved much."
The commendable work will continue this year, with the aim to create a more connected wildlife corridor, enriching the habitat for native animals by planting trees specific to the site.
"A great deal of weed suppression has been done in preparation for National Tree Day," Ms Rifello said.
"This planting will help to replace weeds, impede erosion and stabilise the riverbank, creating a functional and diverse environment for all to enjoy."
Each attendee will get a free tree to take home.
The event is sponsored by Tweed Shire Council, Ukira and Tweed Landcare Inc.
Coffee and tea will be provided, but bring a mug and some morning tea to share.
Residents are encouraged to come along to National Tree Day with their hat, gloves and planting gear in hand.
