THE flooding of Tweed Valley Way after major rain events will continue with Tweed Shire Council unable to flood-proof the road.

Planning and infrastructure engineer Danny Rose said the council was 'limited' in what it could do to the major connection between Murwillumbah and the Pacific Hwy.

"There is limited ability to upgrade TVW, due to the potential impacts on flood flows during events," Mr Rose said.

"Raising the road will limit the ability for the river to break out into the floodplain storages, which results in greater impacts along the river as flood peaks cannot dissipate.

"Given the length of road that is flood liable, it is also not financial feasible to do so.

"Alternative routes need to be used during such events, although sometimes this will be inconvenient."

After the wild weather on the Australia Day weekend, Tweed Valley Way was closed for almost four days for floodwater to retreat.

It was one of the last roads in the shire to reopen because if floodwater.
