TWEED sports stars have helped the Queensland Blades open men's hockey team to victory.

Dylan Wotherspoon, Jake Farrell and Jason Wilson played in the winning team at this year's 2012 Australian Hockey League tournament held in Canberra.

Wotherspoon, from Murwillumbah, said it was not an easy win against reigning champions Western Australian Thundersticks.

"They're the champions and they were looking for a back to back win," he said.

The Blades won 3-2 to the Thundersticks in what Wotherspoon considered an intense game.

He scored the opening goal.

"It was pretty good in the early sort of stages," he said.

"We had two goals before half time and they had one."

The Blades scored their third and final goal in the second half, but the Thundersticks weren't going out without a fight and scored their second goal with just 15 minutes to go.

Although they came out on top in the end the Blades had previously lost to NSW and had a nil all game against Tasmania.

Wotherspoon has high hopes for his future; the promising 19-year-old was recently announced as a member of the National Junior Squad.

He will play at the Sydney Youth Olympics in January and will find out in the next few days if he will be on a plane to play in Malaysia on Sunday.

The Murwillumbah lad said he has been playing field hockey his entire life thanks to the influence from his parents and older sisters.

The Blades' players are now eagerly awaiting the announcement of the updated Kookaburras Squad selections are announced each year following the respective AHL tournament.
