Tweed struck by finals fever
FOOTY finals fever has reached the Tweed and the van de Driest, van der Wall and Papalia families will gather at the Papalia's home to watch Hawthorne's Hawks take on the Sydney Swans.
The families' male offspring are committed to junior AFL football with Caiden Papalia and Callum van de Driest turning out for the Tweed Coast Tigers every weekend during the season.
Callum said he looked forward to the big match because he and his dad had five bucks riding on the result.
Caiden said he wasn't sure who he was going for as his favourite team Carlton hadn't made it to the Grand Final.
Dad Rick van de Driest said the families' gathering was a tradition which came from Melbourne but was slowly taking hold in the Tweed.
The families would watch the match and play some footy during half time or whenever the game allowed.
"We get together, have a barbeque and really make a day of it," Mr van de Driest said.
It wasn't only the males of the families who looked forward to the game with twins Ruby and Lily van de Driest also getting ready for the big match.
"We're looking forward to the match and getting it out of the way before the youngsters get stuck into little athletics and nippers for the summer season," Mr van de Driest said.
