Tweed residents get dirty in massive clean up effort

AS flood waters receded from the Tweed's backyards and streets, the people came out with hoses and shovels to begin the clean up.

At Tumbulgum, residents, friends and neighbours banded together to remove some of the river mud deposited on their driveways and lawns.

Tim Murphy and Anthea Bennett were at a property on Riverside Dr Tumbulgum that was one of the hardest hit areas cleaning a yard that was under more than 30cm of water only 48 hours earlier.

Taylor's Corner Service Station co-owner Steve Brown was hosing away mud from the front of his shop.

"We were prepared and probably lost only about $500 in stock," Mr Brown said.

"When you are in a flood prone area you need a plan."

Mr Brown moved all electrical equipment to higher ground and removed the pumps from the petrol bowsers before the flood water reached the business' door.

"People in flood affected areas need to take the situation in their own hands," he said.

SES crews were still patrolling the street around the Tweed helping with the clean up on Wednesday afternoon.
