TWEED City Shopping Centre has celebrated its 30th birthday today, promising visitors a fun-filled evening starting at 5pm.
The centre has played a key role in the Tweed, Northern Rivers and southern Gold Coast communities for 30 years now and is continuing to grow.
It opened in 1982 featuring 59 specialty stores including Kmart, Best & Less and Coles.
Centre manager Kathryn Mills said a further development in 1986 saw the additional 20 specialty stores including Franklins Supermarket and a new Eastern mall.
In 1997, the next development stage occurred following the purchase of two holes of the Tweed and Coolangatta Golf Club, adding a further 60 specialty stores.
The cinema complex was added in 1999, which has grown with the needs of the community along with new technology.
"The most significant development and growth for the centre occurred in 2007 which changed the face of Tweed City.
"This development added a new 600-seat food court, approximately 45 new specialty stores including a new fashion mall, relocation of Coles, new travelators and lifts and upgrade to all amenities," she said.
Tweed City Shopping Centre has been active with community groups and supports fundraising and charity groups including Red Cross, Tweed PCYC, Leukaemia Foundation, Cancer Council, Tweed Parkinson's support group, New Horizons, Prostate support group and diabetes support group to name a few.
The birthday celebrations start with a cake ceremony at 6pm, followed with live entertainment by the band "Trace" throughout the evening.
Games and competitions will be on with free nibbles and refreshments and hundreds of prizes, vouchers and giveaways from stores with also the winner of brand new Chery J1 from Tweed Coast Chery being announced at 6.30pm.
