Tweed Catholic Church marks 100 years with a book
THE Catholic Church in the Tweed is celebrating its centenary and to mark the occasion it's taking a look back over its colourful history.
Father John Darbyshire commissioned the book The Catholic Church in Tweed Heads from historian and long-time Daily News columnist Di Millar to mark the 100 years.
The book contains the story of the Catholic Church from its beginnings in the region when Redemptorist fathers arrived in the Tweed in March 1912 to where it stand today in the community.
Father Darbyshire said it was not a coffee table book.
"It is alway being opened to find out something you didn't know before," he said.
"If there is something you don't know then you go to the book. It's a great reference source."
Father Darbyshire said he was surprised at the resources the Mrs Millar had to compile the book.
She said it took between 18 months to two years to complete the book.
"I wanted to make sure it was all primary source materials. I only use primary sources for imformation," Mrs Millar said.
"Tracking down the relevant photos was difficult and I found some in the most obscure places.
"I wanted to get as many of the photo with the local people in it."
Father Darbyshire said this book was not just for the Catholic Church but for everyone with a connection with the Tweed.
