TEA makers in the Tweed were only made aware that they were nominated for a prestigious tasting award when they were informed that they won it.

Madura Tea Estates director Gary Davey said winning the Canstar Blue Taste Award in the tea bag category was "totally unexpected".

"We didn't even know it was happening," Mr Davey said.

The Tweed tea company beat famous tea brands such as Dilmah, Nerada, Bushells and Lipton.

Mr Davey said being a smaller producer was an advantage for producing better tasting tea.

"We are small enough to be choosing on what we put in our tea," Mr Davey said.

"They can't buy the quality at those volumes."

Mr Davey said it was great to win the award because taste of the product was one on the company's focuses.

"It's a major pat on the back for the people who work here and the founders," he said.

"We have up to 13 blends in our tea to maintain the flavour profiles."

Canstar Blue is an initiative of ratings company CANSTAR.

Canstar Blue's goal is to help consumers make the right choices by promoting product excellence.
