Tiny Tigers off to flying start

THE Tweed Coast Tigers Under 12's JAFL team got off to a flying start in the round one kick-off to the 2012 season.

Newly appointed coach Mark Lambert praised their efforts.

"I would like to congratulate all the players for the great effort in today's first official footy game of the season between the Tweed Tigers and Ballina Bombers," Mr Lambert said.

After the Ballina ground was washed out at the last minute, the game was moved to the Tigers home ground at Round Mountain.

"It was a very close game, a lot closer than we hoped for. The Tigers led all the way, opening up by booting seven goals to the Bombers two in the first half, however, Ballina came back in the third keeping the Tigers goal-less and picking up three.

"With both teams kicking three goals a piece in the last quarter, Ballina put in a consistently hard game, but the Tweed Tigers were the ultimate victors," he said.

The final score was Tweed Tigers 10.5.65 to Ballina Bombers 8.5.53.

All players put their hearts and bodies into the game with some big tackles from Billy and Tom Porter.

The back line had a very tough day as a strong Ballina forward line gave the boys a few hard knocks but Elliott Hawkins put in some good kicking to push the ball back into our forward line.

It was very hard to pick one outstanding player as all the boys gave their all.

Goal kickers and best on ground included Connor McDowell, Jack Robson, Kahani Flanagan, Finn Kenny and Micah Margieson.

Mr Lambert said the team showed good sportsmanship with three Tigers players each quarter playing for the opposition, increasing their on field numbers and giving all the boys a game.

"A special thanks to all the parents for their support and to club president Rick van den Driest, secretary Des Jelancic, team manager Chris Hawkins and assistant coach Cameron Luff for their hard work, help and guidance as we could not have proceeded without them," Mr Lambert said .

Training is at Pottsville Oval from 4.30pm Wednesday and Friday nights. The next game is against Murwillumbah at Round Mountain this Sunday at 10.30am.
