Time ticking on fine amnesty

Don't let your fines reach court - take advantage of an amnesty for Northern Rivers residents.
Don't let your fines reach court - take advantage of an amnesty for Northern Rivers residents.

TWEED residents have until tomorrow (July 31) to take advantage of a NSW Government fine amnesty.

The "fix up your fines in July" program is being run by Legal Aid NSW in conjunction with the Aboriginal Legal Service of NSW and the ACT.

Figures suggest a staggering 12,510 people in Byron and Tweed have overdue fines.

People who owe money to the State Debt Recovery Office for unpaid fines can have their licence cancelled by Roads and Maritime Services, their car registration cancelled or their belongings seized.

Lismore Legal Aid Senior civil law solicitor Lurline Dillon-Smith said the program has transformed the lives of some people who have participated.

"People's lives get chaotic and fines build up and for some people it becomes bigger than Ben Hur," she said.

"If you enter into instalment payments to pay your fines you can have your RMS sanctions lifted almost immediately and get your licence back."

The amnesty is for those in the Northern Rivers.

There's one workshop left if you would like help sorting your fines.

It's at Lismore tomorrow (July 31) from 9.30pm -3.30pm at Rekindling The Spirit, Molesworth St.

If you cannot attend this session, contact Legal Aid NSW on 02 6621 2082 or the Aboriginal Legal Service on 02 6622 7088 for more information.
