FIREFIGHTERS were been kept busy at the weekend with two Murwillumbah businesses gutted by fire last night and the historical Uki pub destroyed on Saturday night.

At about 10.45pm NSW Fire and Rescue were called to the Brisbane St building to find NRMA and the Palms Cafe engulfed in flames.

Murwillumbah Captain Greg Hayes said it took just under an hour to extinguish the blaze.

"The building was full of black smoke," he said.

"The back of the shops were badly heat damaged."

Captain Hayes said the back area of NRMA building was also damaged by smoke and water.

The cause has not been confirmed but Captain Hayes said it was most likely an electrical fault.

"We think it is electrical," he said.

NRMA employees refused to comment on the fire while waiting in front of the shop.

Passers-by couldn't believe a fire could happen in such damp conditions.

Tweed Shire Council were called in to direct pedestrians around the fire affected area as there was risk of more glass shattering.

On Saturday night the Mt Warning Hotel at Uki was also destroyed by fire.
