Theatre companies struggle to find Tweed venues
PERFORMANCE space is at a premium in the Tweed with some companies cutting back their seasons.
Tweed Theatre Company has cancelled its major musical for the year after it was unable to secure a venue for the performance.
Company president Coral Kelly said the company did not have a major musical this year.
"There is always more drama off the stage than on," Mrs Kelly said.
Northern Rivers Ballet's Fiona Munroe said finding venues for a performance was one of the major challenges and the company was forced to find space elsewhere.
"I went down to Byron Bay and Lismore looking for venues," Ms Munroe said.
Murwillumbah Theatre Company artistic director Julie West said the town had only one large venue and it was in high demand from performance groups, schools and festival organisers.
"It does make it a little difficult," Ms West said.
"Getting a venue does involve a lot of negotiation."
Ms West said in the long term the company would like to have its own venue.
The demand was likely to continue with no plans to increase available space in the near future.
"It has been identified that there's a desire for a more suitable and purpose-built facility however the cost implications are significant and council has no plans to build a performing arts centre," Tweed Shire Council community and natural resources director David Oxenham said.
