THE Tweed and Northern Rivers have had more insurance claims than anywhere in NSW after ex-cyclone Oswald hit the area.

An Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) spokesperson has said that there has been over 2000 claims across the state from flood declared areas, with many more expected over the coming days.

Insurance claims already add up to $10 million worth of damage caused by dramatic flooding and winds, which affected much of the state.

The spokesperson added that Tweed and Northern Rivers had evidently received the worst of the damage from the weather event.

ICA declared the areas "...a catastrophe", which allowed insurers to designate resources to Tweed and Northern Rivers.

ICA CEO Rob Whelan said insurers were still monitoring the current flood situation.

"Insurers have set up a taskforce to coordinate the industry's response to the emerging disaster in NSW," he said.

"I would encourage anyone who thinks they may wish to make a claim on their insurance to contact their insurance company or broker as soon as they can to discuss their policy and the next steps they should take."

The ICA is operating a disaster hotline for people who have inquiries about claims processes and the number is 1800 734 621.
