Stormy night ahead for Tweed

THE dry spell in the Tweed could be well and truly broken tonight with a storm predicted followed by unstable weather into next week.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Tweed has a change of thunderstorms predicted for this afternoon or tonight.

A cold front is expected early next week which is likely to bring further showers.

The Weather Channel's chief meteorologist Dick Whitaker said various places in state experienced a dry spell in the past few months because of a high pressure front, but that could all be over from tonight.

Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Acacia Pepler said the Tweed district's weather could go either way this year.

"This season in the Tweed Heads area has equal odds of being wetter or drier," she said.

With the look of the clouds over the coast this morning it is looking to get wet and wild tonight.

Hopefully this weekend's weather does not trump last year's.

About this time last year we saw 1004mm pour down of rain when the average is almost half at 558mm.
