Stars to miss big triathlon
BOTH reigning champions in the Olympic class won't be back to defend their titles in tomorrow's 6th Kingscliff Triathlon but the premier event on the program has still attracted a host of elite triathletes.
Courtney Atkinson and women's champion, Jodie Stimpson, told organisers that they couldn't return to the Tweed to defend their crowns.
The men's Olympic race will have 29 men and seven women swimming 1.5km, cycling 40km and finishing with a 10km run.
The weekend's action starts today; two events are programmed today to get people of all ages into the "vibe of the thing" - the Zoot Fun Run and the fusion cycles Social Ride.
The fun run over 5km begins at 9am, but earlier in the morning the social ride cyclists begin pedalling at 7.30am.
The 62km course takes the cyclists through the beautiful Kingscliff countryside through Hastings Point, Pottsville before looping back to finish along the waterfront at Kingscliff Beach.
Tomorrow's action which has attracted more than 1000 competitors, begins at 6.30am with the start of the junior (7-9yrs) race, the Olympic class begins at 8am while last race to start is the Olympic Teams at 9.15am.
Other classes are also being contested.
