Shopping strip gets $2m refurb
A PROPOSED $2.2 million revamp for Griffith St, Coolangatta, incorporating large canopy trees and creative lighting is looking to reinvigorate the shopping strip and improve public safety.
Focusing on the section between McLean and Warner Sts, the makeover also aims to integrate nearby Marine Pde and Chalk St into the city precinct.
Divisional Councillor Chris Robbins said it was an exciting project for Coolangatta with final details awaiting completion of the consultation process.
"It's important to consult with the community so I urge everyone, especially those with business interests in Coolangatta, to have their say," Cr Robbins said.
"This will be a great facelift and will improve the amenity of the area."
A council spokesman said there had been a good response to last Saturday's on-site information day with over a hundred feedback forms received.
Plans of the project can be viewed from Tuesday, September 18 until October 2 at the Coolangatta Library in the Showcase centre and comments can be posted on the council's website.
The revitalisation would see the addition of modern design features including public art and outdoor dining to the laneway opposite Dutton St which currently connects Griffith St to the Chalk St car park.
Part of the council's Centre Improvement Program, the plan was developed in consultation with local commercial property owners and business operators.
Two-thirds of the project will be funded by the council with the remaining third to be paid by commercial property owners via a levy over a 10-year period.
