School zone safety gets green light
TWEED school zones will become a little safer following the announcement the NSW government will install new flashing lights at Tweed Heads Public School, Tweed River High School and Tweed Heads South Public School.
The lights are already in place at Terranora Public School at Terranora Rd and have made a difference, according to grandmother Carla Turrall.
Mrs Turrall, who collects her granddaughter Tianne each day from the school, said the lights were much easier and quicker to spot.
"People notice them much better," Mrs Turrall said.
Granddaughter Tianne said the lights were an improvement and should be placed at all schools.
The three Tweed locations are part of 179 new school zones around the state which will benefit from the improved warning signals covering 189 different schools.
NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell joined Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and member for East Hills Glenn Brookes recently to make the announcement.
Premier O'Farrell said he was very proud the NSW coalition government had accelerated the roll out and exceeded the coalition's election commitment.
"These warning lights are about making the school environment as safe as possible for children."
"All the evidence shows flashing lights in school zones slow down drivers and save lives."
"Flashing lights make a difference in school zones but drivers should be vigilant anywhere children might be about," Mr O'Farrell said.
Minister Gay said "the NSW government has a $17 million commitment to roll out more flashing lights over the next three years.
"I'm especially pleased the rollout will include 43 zones in country areas."
The new lights bring the total number of school zones covered by flashing lights to 1,051 covering a total of 1,221 of the approximately 3,150 NSW schools.
The flashing lights are expected to be in place by June of next year.
