Salt surf life savers compete in country champs
SALT Surf Life Saving Club is sending one of its largest teams to the Surf Life Saving NSW Country Championships.
The newest NSW surf club has a squad of 25 heading to South West Rocks this weekend for the competition.
Salt Surf Life Saving Club's junior activities coordinator Jeff Smith said the club had five competitors last year but this weekend three seniors, three cadets and 19 juniors will compete.
"We haven't done much training over the Christmas break most have done their own training, but we have a good training session this morning."
Ms Smith said the country championship were not a barometer of how the members would perform at the state titles in March.
"It's not the same as the state championships. We have the branch titles at the end of this month which will be a better indication," he said.
NSW Surf Life Saving surf sports manager Daniel Pearce said South West Rocks has hosted the championships for the past four years.
"Things are looking really good," Mr Pearce said.
"It should be pretty warm with a 2m swell so it's not too rough but competitors will find it challenging."
Mr Pearce said about 1400 competitors would converge on the beach.
"The far north coast has been a big supporter of the event," Mr Pearce said.
Cudgen Headland Surf Life Saving Club has 110 competitors heading to the championships.
