RUGGED terrain and floodwaters have hampered efforts to restore power to the remaining 1500 Northern Rivers residents who are still blacked out.

However, Essential Energy says this number should decrease considerably over the next 24 hours.

Crews used a boat to gain access to sections of damaged network around Clothiers Creek, with supply returned to customers there overnight.

In the Numinbah area more than 30 customers remain without power due to extensive damage to the network. Essential Energy crews are now working in this area and are hoping to be able to restore supply there today.

Crews are also hopeful of returning supply to 22 customers in the Smiths Creek area at Stokers Siding today, where there have been major vegetation issues. There are also five crews working at Nolans Road, straightening poles and replacing broken pole cross-arms and damaged powerlines. Power should be restored to 28 customers there by late today.

Essential Energy is also working at Stotts Creek in the Chinderah area and is hopeful of having supply restored to the majority of customers there later today.
