Richmond officers will investigate deadly pursuit

John Gass

INVESTIGATORS from Richmond Area Command are investigating a fatality in the Tweed after a motorcyclist crashed during a police pursuit.

Assistant Commissioner Carlene York said the police were underway with an "independent critical incident investigation".

According to initial reports from police, about 8.10pm on Wednesday highway police detected a motorcyclist travelling south along Terranora Road, East Tumbulgum, about 15km west of Tweed Heads.

Asst Commissioner York said it's alleged the motorcyclist was speeding and a pursuit was initiated that lasted only a short distance before the rider lost control and collided with a tree.

The 42-year-old man riding the motorcycle died at the scene.

A report was prepared for the NSW coroner.
