Recorders to play Opera House
EDUCATION Week was launched on Monday at the Murwillumbah Public School with kindergarten verse speaking as well as performances by the school's choir and recorder ensemble.
Music director Vicki Armor said the 13-strong ensemble played Rondeau in five parts by French composer Jean-Joseph Mouret using four different types of recorders.
Ranging in age from 9 to 13, the ensemble has its sights set on Sydney in three weeks' time when they will be performing at the Opera House in the Festival of Instrumental Music organised by the Department of Education and Training.
Monday's 9am launch was attended by students, parents, families, patrons and community members and included presentations of awards.
Ms Armor said the theme for this year's Education Week was Creating the Future, which she said indicative of what the school was trying to do.
"We're creating the future of Australia in our classrooms every day at Murwillumbah Public School," she said.
Other Education Week activities include Maths For Fun in the school hall on Wednesday and Thursday, with a dance simultaneous launch at the Tweed River Art Gallery at 10.30am on Thursday.
School principal Les Daley said the four minute-long dance would be filmed and put on the department's website.
On Tuesday students will attend the Byron Bay Writers' Festival where writers will speak to them about the process of creating a children's book
Next Monday, August 6, students will participate in a mini Olympics at the Mustangs football ground complete with flags and teams representing different countries.
