Ratepayers group needs members

MURWILLUMBAH'S Ratepayers and Resident Association needs more members soon or it could disappear within a year.

Association president Robyn Lemaire said unless the community advocate group signs up a significant number of new members, the association could be disbanded.

The group's membership counted around 60 members at its highpoint but is now down to less than 10 members.

Ms Lemaire said the association's financial situation was "okay" until next year but unless more members of the community joined, the outlook was extremely grim.

The association was formed in 2004 and has been instrumental in getting Murwillumbah residents' message across to decision makers, the council and the wider community.

The association was one of the first points of contact between the community and Tweed Shire Council and would be greatly missed if it would be forced to disband, Ms Lemaire said.

Over the last few years, the association submitted a number of proposals to the council on matters of interest to the Murwillumbah community including a second bridge in Murwillumbah, the Community Strategic Plan, the Flood Risk Management Plan and the Murwillumbah Community Centre.

Ms Lemaire said because Murwillumbah was a high population growth town, it could expect a lot of changes over the next few years and it was important to ensure local residents' voices continued to be heard.

The association meets every third Monday of each month at the Autumn Club in Tumbulgum Rd in Murwillumbah from 7.30pm onward.

The next meeting is planned for September 17 and members will discuss such issues as the development of Newell Park.

Anyone wishing to contribute or support the association financially thereby ensuring the future of the group, can join for just $6 per year.

Participation is welcome however not required and new members can attend next week's monthly meeting or contact the association's president Robin Lemaire on 02 6672 1791 or correspond through PO Box 851, Murwillumbah 2484.
