Push for Bay St beautification
THE Tweed's business community is applauding the council's move to tidy up Bay St.
Tweed Shire councillors voted yesterday to negotiate with the land owner at the corner of Wharf and Bay sts to enhance the location.
The Tweed Chamber of Commerce president Rory Curtis had pushed for the beautification of the street to make it more appealing for visitors.
"What we have there at the moment just looks like a bomb site that just looks terrible," Mr Curtis said.
"The chamber board has indicated that it will get out with shovels if necessary to clear it up.
"This will help with the street appeal."
Mayor Barry Longland put to notice of motion before council on Tuesday for the council to enter negotiations with the owner in order to "enhance the gateway public domain of Tweed Heads".
Cr Dot Holdom said she supported the plan but reminded the council that she did not support the ratepayers putting in "one brass razoo" to beautify private land.
The land owner was not available for comment.
