Public has say on learner test

TWEED driving instructors, learners and their parents are invited to share their thoughts on the Q-SAFE learner driver test before changes are made to the practical assessment.

Public opinion is needed to determine whether the test is properly preparing learner drivers, with consultation ending on the 16th of September this year.

Q-SAFE is the first practical assessment Leaner Drivers will undertake before they are allowed to drive with supervision on public roads and was first introduced in 1998, with no changes since.

Some of the changes proposed included relocating test sites, better examination of driving testers and a change in the format of the test.

Roger Patterson of Patterson Driving School said that the assessment was already thorough enough and that learner drivers still had to complete 120 hours of on the road training.

"120 hours of driving to gain their P's is excessive, they've already passed a thorough driving test."

Mike Hayden of Twin Towns Driving School agreed and said he thought learners were ready after the Q-SAFE practical test.

"It's all about the learner's attitude to driving, the test is comprehensive enough."

All of the driving instructors MyDailyNews talked to said they were unaware of public consultation on the issue and did not know changes were being considered.

The expert review was completed in late 2011 and the final report was delivered on January 24 2012.

The Transport Minister will consider public opinion and the report to decide on any changes to be made to the learner driving test.

The public can complete the online survey on Q-SAFE located at www.qld.gov.au to voice their opinion.
