GOLD Coast City Council has removed a tree that an Elanora woman chained herself to last month in an attempt to save it.
The council said in a statement that the two camphor laurel trees on Duringan St, Currumbin, had been poisoned and required removal.
"Last month, someone illegally entered the construction site and drilled holes at the base of the trees, filling them with an unknown substance," the statement said.
"Despite treating the trees as directed by council's arborist, it was confirmed that the trees were irreversibly dying."
The two trees were initially earmarked for removal to construct a boardwalk on Currumbin Creek's southern bank but Lynne Hargreaves chained herself to on 80-year-old tree for a week to save it.
After Ms Hargreaves' seven-day protest at the site the council decided to review the plans to avoid removing the trees.
