AUSTRALIA Day is a time to reflect on our past, present and future.

It's also a time to recognise the achievements of ordinary Australians doing exceptional things.

Bruce Miller may not see his role as carer and businessman as special.

But like many other Aussie heroes sung and unsung, this Tweed Coast Citizen of the Year has shown the true meaning of compassion - and love.

Mr Miller runs the Blue Rose Cafe at Cabarita and is the full-time carer of his wife, Shirley who suffers from a crippling disease.

"He's so dedicated," said his daughter Melinda Miller.

"He's relentless.

"I'm so proud of him.

"He's totally devoted to caring for mum.

"And he's such a lovely person.

"He truly deserves to be recognised."

The stoic Pottsville dad and grandad is very humble about the whole thing.

"There are many people out there doing many things that are worthy of recognition," he said.

"I don't know why I am lucky enough to be chosen.

"I just look after Shirley.

"Why wouldn't I?"

"I love her."
