Positive parenting in Tweed
FAMILIES are being both perfected and brought back from the brink in Tweed Heads South.
Family Centre senior family worker Steve Marriott said some people who attended the eight week Triple P - Positive Parenting Program - which finished last week "desperately needed the program".
"These people would require some kind of service - a tailored program to help their parenting," Mr Marriott said.
"But we also had people with just run of the mill parenting problems."
He said there were noticeable changes to the language and habits used by parents who had been through the internationally renowned and State Government sanctioned course.
"And parents have noticed a real change in their child's behaviour, as a result.
"Parents come together to talk about their shared issues and, significantly, they learn from each other.
"I often say there's a room full of shared wisdom - a couple of hundred years of shared wisdom all up."
Participant Fiona Southham said she enjoyed the course and found its content informative and simple.
"The connection and sharing with other parents was very refreshing and helpful," she said.
"The world would benefit if all parents had access to attend this course."
And Lesley Murray said she now placed much greater value of her son's input and opinion.
"The most beneficial part for me was learning to communicate with my son and learning to really listen to him and his needs," she said.
The next Triple P program begins again on April 26 and the Family Centre is looking for participants.
Mr Marriott said before the course was launched it emphasised a balance between promoting children's good behaviour and managing their bad.
"A lot of parents want some simple tool to fix misbehaviour," he said.
"We emphasise kids do not misbehave all the time, and when parents notice kids being good they should encourage it."
