Police still investigating crash which caused mass blackout

POLICE are still investigating how a 23-year-old Uki man smashed into a power pole and blacked out 1300 homes last week.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command Inspector Jim Kain said the man was taken to Gold Coast hospital and put in an induced coma after the crash.

On Thursday, Insp Kain still said he was not sure of the man's condition but no tests or interviews had been conducted.

"We're still investigating," he said.

On Saturday, morning the man was travelling south in a white ute along Kyogle Rd when it collided with the power pole about 100m south of Tyalgum Rd intersection.

Police said the impact split a section of the pole and the driver was trapped in the car.

The driver was transported to Tweed Heads Hospital before being transferred to the Gold Coast Hospital with two broken ankles, facial fractures and internal bleeding.

An Essential Energy spokeswoman said 1299 customers were affected by the outage on Saturday morning.

"The power went off at 7.50am with the majority of customers having their supply restored at 8.30am due to Essential Energy crews being able to back feed power around the network to affected customers," the spokeswoman said.

"A handful of customers remained without supply while Essential Energy replaced the power pole."
