POLICE want to speak to the driver of a car which forced another vehicle off the road and into the Tweed River yesterday.

A 20-year-old man behind the wheel of a white Holden Commodore was forced to take evasive action when another vehicle crossed into his lane, causing his car to mount the kerb and roll down a steep embankment.

The cars were travelling on the Kyogle Road, about 2km south of the Guineas fruit and vegetable shop, south of Murwillumbah, late yesterday afternoon.

Tweed Byron Police Sergeant Doug Connors confirmed the details this morning.

"The 20-year-old had rounded a bend when an oncoming vehicle crossed slightly into his lane, and he took evasive action," he said.

Sgt Connors said the driver of the Commodore was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

"There is no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor," he said.

The vehicle that left its lane has not been identified and police have called for the driver to contact Murwillumbah police.
