Police, council warn Roseberry Ck owner on doof party plan
POLICE and the local council will be closely monitoring a property at Roseberry Creek, north of Kyogle, this Australia Day weekend with fears an illegal two-day doof party could draw thousands of revellers.
After being alerted by residents who had reportedly been advised of the event planned for today and tomorrow by the owner of the property hosting the dance party, Kyogle Shire Council staff inspected the site this week.
An event prevention notice under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act was served on the alleged party host.
Lachlan Black, acting director of council's Planning and Environmental Services, said the three council officers who undertook the inspection reported that preparations for a sizeable crowd appeared to be under way despite their being no approval in place.
"It was obvious something was being planned and no consent was in place," Mr Black said.
"It appears they are marketing tickets online. There is evidence they were planning a big crowd. "
Council had received complaints from residents about the potential impacts of such an event including the wear and tear on local roads.
Sgt Aaron Reid from Kyogle police said they also had approached a person who was believed to be the party organiser and warned him off.
Sgt Reid said "the ball was now in the court of the organisers".
The Kyogle area has proved a popular venue for doof organisers in recent years, including an event in 2010 where a man was killed when he was hit by a car being driven by a partygoer.
The organisers were subsequently fined more than $10,000 by the Kyogle Council.
