Mums reveal holiday budget busters
THERE'S no need to spend a lot of money on your kids in the school holidays.
Two Tweed mums have put together a list of things to do that don't cost the earth.
Beverley Myers and Sylvia Streem from Kingscliff are full-time mums, each with three kids under 12 years old.
"It's a constant task to think of things to do with children in the holidays," Ms Myers said.
"Especially if you can't afford to go away or spend a fortune on fun parks and movies.
"They are great things to do, but not on a daily basis."
Ms Streem said going to the park was an underestimated joy.
"All kids love a playground; even big kids and it's a great way to socialise.
"We also go to a local cycle way/bike track or go rollerblading. It's a great way to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the sunshine and exercise."
The mums also suggested paddle boarding, with safe care and instruction.
"Have a movie afternoon, great for a rainy day.
"Rent a couple of good kids' movies, make some popcorn and snuggle up with blankets and enjoy the movies.
"Invite kids over and you can even share the cost with other parents.
"I've had around 20 kids at my place and we all kicked in for the food.
"It's cheap and it's fun."
Other suggestions from the mums were going for a bushwalk, as there are plenty of walks in the Tweed area.

"Cook some special treats or family favourites like Gingerbread men," Ms Myers said. "Spend the day at the beach, go for a walk and play some games; take the frisbee.
"See who can build the biggest sandcastle or another sand sculpture.
"There're a million things to do that don't cost much, like bubble blowing, having a picnic, taking fun photos, planting flowers or a herb garden, making your own cards with paper and paints and scrap booking."
