MACLEAN resident Bob Little has been looking at McLachlan Park's state of disrepair through the window of his Spar Supermarket across the road for many years.

"It's the gateway to our town and really our only highly visible green space," Mr Little said.

Mr Little was ecstatic when he heard the beautification of McLachlan Park had passed through the first round of the process required to receive a $500,000 grant from the Federal Government.

That $500,000 grant would be matched with another $500,000 from Clarence Valley Council - a total of $1 million to be invested in the revamp.

"There have been so many studies done," Mr Little said.

"It would be good if we can all get behind it."

Maclean Chamber of Commerce president Travis McConnell was equally enthusiastic.

"From the Chamber's point of view we're excited," Mr McConnell said. "There's been a lot of work in the background."

Mr McConnell also said he was pleased to see money raised from the sale of a Maclean asset be re-invested in Maclean.

Mayor Richie Williamson said he was hopeful the project would be successful in the final rounds of the application process.

"I am enthusiastic about the chances of this grant," Cr Williamson said, adding they were serious about the Maclean CBD and waterfront development.
