No moss gathering on Rolling Stone magazine exhibition
AUSTRALIA'S first touring exhibition of Rolling Stone magazine's greatest covers brings rock and roll fans on a nostalgic walk through musical history in the Tweed River Art Gallery.
Tweed Gallery is one of five venues to exhibit the Rolling Stone: The Covers exhibition on December 7, featuring 300 covers of the iconic magazine spanning more than four decades from 1972 to 2010.
Rock and roll fans young and old are in for a thrill at the official opening ceremony held on January 18 by the former Go-Set editor and founder Phillip Frazer, who launched Rolling Stone Australia in 1972.
Tweed River Art Gallery Director Susi Muddiman said she is looking forward to the exhibition presented by Rolling Stone and toured by artisan, a gallery based in Brisbane.
"The best thing about it is that it is introducing another audience. The magazine has got a fine art appeal and graphic art look with photography, the banner and masthead that attracts a new music based audience," Ms Muddiman said.
"We always try to book exhibitions that engage a variety of the public."
A highlight for Beatles fans is the 1980 cover photo of John Lennon, photographed 24 hours before he was shot dead in his apartment and was hailed the best magazine cover in history by the magazine industry.
Even fans of The Simpsons are catered for with a series of witty redesigned Simpsons covers of some of the world's greatest albums including Nirvana's Nevermind and The Beatles Abbey Road record.
"What is most exciting is the fact that it is an iconic magazine of popular culture and 300 of the greatest covers that spans a long period of time, of influential art and photography in creating the cover that is the appeal in itself," Ms Muddiman said.
